James Henry Walker, a deeply loved patriarch, veteran, and pillar of his community, passed away on October 4, 2024, at the age of 94. James was born on August 22, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Charles and Mary Walker. He lived a life rich in love, service, and resilience, inspiring all who knew him.
Growing up in the segregated South, James faced challenges with determination and grace, embodying strength from a young age. After graduating from Parker High School in Birmingham, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. His bravery and commitment to his country earned him several honors, including the Korean Service Medal.
Upon his return, James moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked for over 30 years at the Ford Motor Company as a skilled machinist. He was known for his work ethic, integrity, and dedication to his craft, always taking pride in providing for his family.
James married the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Johnson, in 1957. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, spanning 62 years until Dorothy’s passing in 2019. Together, they raised four children: Charles, Lena, Harold, and Patricia. A man of deep faith, James was a long-time member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and choir member for many years. His booming baritone voice was a fixture at Sunday services, and he was admired for his commitment to uplifting others through both his faith and his actions.
Outside of work and church, James was passionate about mentoring young men in his community. He was instrumental in founding a local boys’ club, providing guidance and support to generations of youth. He often spoke of the importance of education and perseverance, having lived through times of both hardship and progress. James loved spending time with his family, and he was especially proud of his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Pop-Pop.”
James was known for his wisdom, sense of humor, and unwavering support of his loved ones. Whether sitting on the porch telling stories of his youth, or offering advice to anyone who needed it, he was a source of comfort and strength.
James leaves behind his four children: Charles Walker (Monica), Lena Jackson (Thomas), Harold Walker (Cynthia), and Patricia Walker. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who cherished his presence.
A homegoing service will be held on October 12, 2024, at Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Detroit. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Detroit or the American Cancer Society, both causes dear to James.
James Henry Walker’s legacy of love, service, and faith will continue to shine through the many lives he touched. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his commitment to his family, and his enduring impact on his community.
The four of us Walker children have come together to share a few cherished memories of our remarkable father.
Dad was always there for us. He’d come home from work, tired but always ready to play a game of catch, read us a bedtime story, or help with our homework. He taught us the value of hard work, honesty, and kindness.-Charles
My parents’ love story was one for the ages. They were married for 62 years, a testament to their enduring love and commitment. Dad always treated Mom with respect, kindness, and unwavering devotion. He was her rock, her protector, and her best friend. Their love story, guided by God’s grace, was a beautiful example of what a marriage should be. I aspire to have a love as strong and enduring as theirs.-Lena
Dad’s faith was a central part of his life. He would often share Bible verses and pray with us. He taught us the importance of forgiveness, gratitude, and always striving to be a better person.-Harold
Despite his serious demeanor, Dad had a great sense of humor. He loved telling jokes and making us laugh. He could always find a way to lighten the mood, even in difficult times.-Patricia
Dad loved us unconditionally. He was always there to support us, no matter what. He taught us the importance of family and the power of love.-The Four Walker Children & our families
